Volume 1: Wave 1: The First Contract & The Behemoth's Ignition
The subterranean atmosphere of the Sector 7 Western Pneumatic Junction hung heavy with the acrid stench of scorched graphite, pulverized concrete, and the sickly sweet residue of Ashen spore fog. Outside the reinforced composite viewport of the extraction vehicle, the ruins of the old world stretched into the tar-black gloom like the ribcage of an ancient leviathan. Every few seconds, the deep, structural groaning of buckling foundation pillars vibrated through the bedrock, rattling the hydraulic pipes and shaking loose showers of powdered lime from the ceiling vault.
Lochlan Cross adjusted the collar of his oilskin field coat, his fingers brushing the smooth, warm contour of the purified Core Matrix resting against his sternum. In seven years as a senior loss adjuster for Vanguard Mutual, he had walked through chemical spills, refinery detonations, and collapsed deep-sea oil platforms, but those corporate disasters had always possessed an underlying structure of human greed and insurance liability. Here, three hundred meters beneath the surface, the only law remaining was the immutable arithmetic of kinetic impact and resource depletion.
“Atmospheric spore saturation is holding at fourteen point two percent,” Lochlan noted aloud, his voice steady and clinical against the low, diesel rumble of the transport engine. “Air filtration scrubber efficiency is down four percent since we cleared the previous transit switch. If we don’t secure fresh industrial charcoal and high-grade copper wiring within forty-eight hours, the ventilation loop will degrade past allowable safety tolerances.”
