“A teenage hacker wages a high-tech asymmetric rebellion against an authoritarian surveillance apparatus following a national crisis.”
Marcus Yallow, a seventeen-year-old hacker from San Francisco known online as 'w1n5t0n', knows how the networked world works and how to bypass school surveillance. But when a devastating terrorist attack destroys the Bay Bridge, Marcus and his friends are seized in the chaotic aftermath and swept into a secret Department of Homeland Security black site. Interrogated and abused, Marcus emerges into a transformed city where constitutional freedoms have been replaced by ubiquitous facial recognition, gait analysis, and police-state surveillance. Refusing to surrender, Marcus uses open-source cryptography, peer-to-peer networks, and teenage ingenuity to organize a digital underground resistance movement to take back the city.
